Mesolithic typochronology Early Mesolithic (Star Carr type) 9300-8300 BC Microliths: Obliquely blunted points, isosceles triangles and trapezes. Distribution: Northern England, Scotland, South Wales and Southern England. Rare in Southern England. Early Mesolithic (Deepcar type) 8700-8200BC Microliths: Obliquely blunted points, some with retouch on the leading edge, partially-backed points; rarer triangles and trapezes. Distribution: Northern England, North Wales and Southern England. Early Mesolithic Nab Head type) 8400-8100BC Microliths: Obliquely blunted points, large variably lateralised scalenes. Distribution: South Wales Early Mesolithic (Cramond type) 8400-8200BC Microliths: Small obliquely blunted points; isosceles triangles; basally retouched points, curve-backed pieces; trapezes. Distribution: Eastern Scotland Middle Mesolithic (Variably lateralised scalenes) 8200-7400BC Microliths: Variably lateralised narrow scalenes, backed bladelets, small obliquely blunted points, isosceles triangles and crescents. Distribution: Scotland, Northern England, West Midlands and North Wales. Middle Mesolithic (Honey Hill type) 8100-7300BC Microliths: Obliquely blunted points, some with retouch on the leading edge; inversely, invasively, basally retouched ‘Honey Hill’ points; lanceolates and variably lateralised scalenes. Distribution: English Midlands. Middle Mesolithic (Horsham) 8000-6900BC Microliths: Small obliquely blunted points; concave, basally retouched, asymmetric ‘Horsham Points’; basally retouched, symmetric ‘Tardenois Points’; rhomboids, rare isosceles triangles. Distribution: Southern and southwestern England. Late Mesolithic (Left lateralised scalenes) 7100-4000BC Microliths: Almost entirely left lateralised scalene triangles, backed bladelets, crescents. Distribution: Found across Britain. Continues unchanged to 4000BC in Scotland. Elsewhere Final Mesolithic types appear. Final Mesolithic (Left lateral scalenes, with 4-sided pieces and micro-tranchets) 5200-4500BC Microliths: Left lateralised scalenes, backed bladelets, crescents, with occasional symmetric or asymmetric micro-tranchets (some with inverse retouch at base) and/or four-sided pieces . Distribution: Southern and Northern England and South Wales. Final Mesolithic (Rod microliths) 4200-3800BC Microliths: Steeply retouched single or double straight-backed bladelets (rods) only. Distribution: Northern England, where distinguished by use of flint only. Probably also present in Southern England.
